About the Unity Reversible Indigenous Blanket

This gorgeous Unity Indigenous blanket is made from sustainable fabric. It’s perfect for family picnics, camping, getting cozy around the campfire and is made large enough for a queen size bed or a throw blanket. The warm and luxurious wool blend makes them soft, yet washable. The trim adds a beautiful finish.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

‘’I drew inspiration from the Onyota’a:ka side of my identity inherited through my father’s lineage.  I wanted this blanket to feature the Dust Fan Wampum Belt, Skydomes, and iconographic representations of people standing hand-in-hand.

In the center of the blanket stands the Dust Fan Wampum Belt, also known as the Everlasting Tree Belt. This belt predates colonization, and represents an integral element of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Tree of Peace. When the Haudenosaunee Confederacy was united, the nations of the confederacy buried their weapons under a white pine to signify their unification under the Great Law of Peace. This belt represents that the Tree of Peace will never stop growing, and thus the peace of the Confederacy won’t either.

The Skydomes represent the Skyworld in our Creation Story, and from where life came.

Finally, the outermost rows of this blanket displays iconographic representations of people standing hand-in-hand. I wanted to include this element to compliment the three innermost rows, symbolizing how we continue to carry ourselves under the Great Law of Peace, and continuing to maintain our connection to both spirit and ceremony.

Because of this, I have decided to name this blanket “Unity.” It is my hope that this blanket both educates and transcends cultures, providing a vision of a world where peace and unity is foundational to all of our communities, societies, and relations across the world, supported by a deep connection to both the natural world and the spirit world, and most importantly, sustained by the good minds of the people we share this world with.’’-Tsista Kennedy

About the artist Tsista Kennedy

Shekoli, Tehatsistahawi ní: yukyáts, a’no:wál niwaki’taló:tʌ̲

Onʌyota’a:ká: kahle Anishinaabe niwakuhutsyó:tʌ̲, Chimnissing nú: teknákehle̲’

Tehatsistahawi (Tsista) Kennedy is an Anishinaabe Onyota’a:aka artist belonging to Beausoleil First Nation and Oneida Nation of the Thames. He is a self taught artist, and often creates his work digitally. Tsista also creates original art pieces with various mediums such as etching on birch bark, and ink on paper.

Tsista’s variation of woodland style can be recognized by semi-bold black lines, intricate patterns, and vibrant colors; all of which work together to make the artwork flow elegantly across the canvas. Because of his ability to convey stories and messages through his artwork, Tsista Kennedy has been commissioned by countless organizations, universities, and businesses to have their stories and brand portrayed through his art.

Tsista Kennedy’s artwork isn’t solely rooted in the traditional aspects of his identity, nor his contemporary perspectives; it’s a merging of the two. With his personal experiences and stories thrown into the mix, combining these two perspectives provides the inspiration behind some of Tsista Kennedy’s artwork today. Being a frequent daydreamer however, many of his best art pieces simply begin as an image or idea popping up in his head.
