ABOUT THE DESIGN

'' When creating a blanket design for MINI TIPI, I felt it would not be genuine to simply adhere to frequently used styles of geometric designs.  This is why I chose to include the subject of wild rice harvesting from my own culture as an Anishnaabe.  Anishnaabe quiltwork was also a source of inspiration for the geometric patterns featured in my design.''

In September, during the harvest moon, the Ojibwe peoples begin the rice harvest. The harvest is done in pairs using poles to hit the rice stocks knocking the grains into the canoe. The rice is an important historic food source for the Ojibwe people that feed their families over the winter months.

About the artist Tsista Kennedy

Shekoli, Tehatsistahawi ní: yukyáts, a’no:wál niwaki’taló:tʌ̲

Onʌyota’a:ká: kahle Anishinaabe niwakuhutsyó:tʌ̲, Chimnissing nú: teknákehle̲’

Tehatsistahawi (Tsista) Kennedy is an Anishinaabe Onyota’a:aka artist belonging to Beausoleil First Nation and Oneida Nation of the Thames. He is a self taught artist, and often creates his work digitally. Tsista also creates original art pieces with various mediums such as etching on birch bark, and ink on paper.

Tsista’s variation of woodland style can be recognized by semi-bold black lines, intricate patterns, and vibrant colors; all of which work together to make the artwork flow elegantly across the canvas. Because of his ability to convey stories and messages through his artwork, Tsista Kennedy has been commissioned by countless organizations, universities, and businesses to have their stories and brand portrayed through his art.

Tsista Kennedy’s artwork isn’t solely rooted in the traditional aspects of his identity, nor his contemporary perspectives; it’s a merging of the two. With his personal experiences and stories thrown into the mix, combining these two perspectives provides the inspiration behind some of Tsista Kennedy’s artwork today. Being a frequent daydreamer however, many of his best art pieces simply begin as an image or idea popping up in his head.
